AWRA-Washington Section September Dinner Meeting
Stormwater Runoff isn't a Problem, it's an Untapped
Resource
Presented by Scott Kindred
Stormwater has been identified as the leading cause of
contamination in Puget Sound and other surface water bodies
across the State of Washington. The conventional perspective
views stormwater as a problem that needs to be addressed by
limiting development, developing new regulations, and
constructing expensive stormwater detention and treatment
systems. In the meantime, our steams run dry during the
summer and groundwater levels are dropping in many areas
across the state. These problems are predicted to increase
due to population increases and loss of our spring and
summer snow pack due to climate change. However, most of our
current water problems (and even more so future problems)
are due to timing of water availability rather than the
total amount of water. This presentation will provide a
different perspective, with a focus on managing stormwater
as a resource rather than a problem, and in the process
helping to address both our water quality and our water
quantity issues across the state.
