The Washington Chapter of the American Water Resources Association
(WA-AWRA) presented our 2008 Annual Conference, “Future of Water
Storage in Washington State” at the Bell Harbor Conference
Center on the Seattle waterfront. Speakers from around the
region examined the need, options, and outlook for water storage
in Washington. A keynote address was presented by Jim Waldo of
Gordon, Thomas, Honeywell, Malanca, Peterson, & Daheim LLP, and
was followed by four sessions. Each session was moderated by an
eminent representative of the legal, environmental, tribal, and
technical aspects of water storage
The first session, “Context,” opened with speakers from
University of Washington’s Climate Impacts Group, the Bureau of
Reclamation, and the Lower Columbia Fish Recovery Board
discussing water availability and in-stream and out-of-stream
demand horizons. In the second session, “Surface Water
Storage,” speakers from Tacoma Public Utilities, Bureau of Reclamation, and CH2M Hill
discussed recent experiences with surface water storage
development in the State. For the third session, “Groundwater
Storage,” speakers from the City of Walla Walla, Washington
Department of Ecology, Oregon Water Resources Department, and
Golder Associates described issues and experiences surrounding
groundwater storage in Washington and Oregon.
